Abstract

The statue of St. Onuphrius was made for the side altar in the third quarter of the 18th century. The grotto was set up only before 1902, where the sculpture of the saint praying before the crucifix and the sculpture of the Virgin Mary and Bernadette Soubirous were interchangeably placed. The statue of St. Onuphrius was made in the workshop belonging to the Kornecki family of Gdów. The saint was a hermit from Egypt, who spent around 60 years of his life alone. He is known from the description of St. Paphnutius, who met him in the grotto with a long gray beard covering his naked body. This relationship has had an influence on the formation of the iconographic pattern of scenes with St. Onuphrius.
