Abstract

The painting of St. Judas Thaddaeus was painted for the altar finial, which was originally under the invocation of St. Anthony of Padua and was created before 1748. It was probably made by Piotr Kornecki, a painter and sculptor, whose workshop is attributed to the production of church furnishings. Saint Judas Thaddaeus is portrayed in iconography with the image of Christ. This is associated with the legend according to which he was to meet with King Abgar in Edessa and heal him with the help of a mandylion, i.e. a cloth with a miraculous face of Christ imprinted on it. The saint's other attribute is the club – an instrument of his martyr's death.
