Abstract

The statue of St. Dominic, together with the sculpture of St. Catherine of Siena, was built along with the side altar of Our Lady of the Rosary, before 1748. Their production is attributed to the workshop of Kornecki – the likely creator of all furnishings of the church in Gdów. In the iconography, Our Lady of the Rosary is very often accompanied by statues of St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena. The saint had a special devotion to the Virgin Mary – according to later tradition, Mary herself was to give him a rosary. He is also considered the author of the prayer of the Holy Rosary. Saint Dominic de Guzmán was the founder of a new religious community based on the rule of St. Augustine – Dominican Friars.
