Originally, in the main area of the eighteenth-century altar of St. Joseph, there was a painting of the saint. Probably during one of the 20th-century post-war restoration works, perhaps due to the destruction of the painting, this sculptural group was re-placed in the altar. The depiction of the Crucifixion with Mary and St. John was taken from the scene that occurred during the martyrdom of Christ on the cross, which is described in the Gospel of St. John.
