History of work

The first church in Poręba Wielka, which was destroyed, was probably erected around 1300. According to the inventory book from 1928, it was rebuilt in 1783 from larch wood from the foundation of Count Stanislaw Ankwicz. However, in the light of later studies, the present temple was most probably built around the middle of the 16th century. Therefore it constitutes one of the oldest examples of sacral architecture in the territory of Silesian Foothills. Before 1644, a tower was added to the 16th century body, which was then transformed (at the end of the 18th century), when the altar finial was added in a form of classicist, obelisk cupola. The temple was renovated several times, among others in 1658 when the renovation was managed by by a carpenter named Wojciech, in the second quarter of the 18th century and in 1799. In 1825, shingle on the tower's walls was replaced. Half of the amount of around one thousand Polish zlotys was covered with communal funds and half with the funds of the manor house. In 1905, the roofs of the church were covered with galvanized sheet metal by a roofer Karolus from Oświęcim. The cost of the works amounted to around two thousand crowns. Then, in 1915, a new floor was made thanks to funds coming from a parish contributions fund. In the years 1916-1917, Adam Giebułtowski from Oświęcim made a polychrome on the walls and ceilings of the nave body and chancel using oil painting technique. The cost of works that amounted to six thousand crowns was covered thanks to the funds gathered by parishioners. In the years 2009-2014, the aforementioned wall decorations underwent conservation works. At that time, the remains of the old 18th century wall decoration were discovered.

Abstract

The wooden church of St. Bartholomew constitutes an example of late-gothic wooden sacral architecture of the Silesia and Lesser Poland border. The 16th-century building is decorated with 18-century furnishings and its walls are adorned with Art Nouveau polychrome.
