Abstract

In 1705, during a church fire, the miraculous image of Madonna of Gdów from the 14th century was destroyed. After this event, a painting of the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception was made in the first half of the 18th century, which has been located in the high altar until today. The image was crowned on September 12, 1999, by cardinal Franciszek Macharski.
The iconography of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in visual arts has developed in association with its cult long before the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, which took place only in 1854. The painting in question depicts Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in the type of an individual image of Mary, called "Ideal Immaculata," which developed in the 17th century and was extremely popular in the 18-th century Polish Commonwealth.
