Abstract

The history of the painting in question is connected with the history of the altar of St. Joseph, in which the work is placed. This altar was made by Maćkowski - a sculptor from Cracow - probably soon after completion of construction and furnishings of the temple in Bachowice in 1931. The author of the painting is the Nazarene, the sister Caritas. The work is an example of religious painting popular at the end of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century, characterised by an idealizing, sentimental convention. It presents an episode, not described in any of the Gospels, preceding the discovery of twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple.
