Abstract

The representation of Saint Joseph has been an important iconographic theme since the Middle Ages, which remained popular until the 20th century. This time, and more rarely, the carpenter was depicted with a flourishing cane, referring to the way he was elected husband of Mary and to the Old Testament figure of Aaron, who, indicated by this miracle, was declared the first high priest of Israel. In the past it was probably a fragment of the altar.
