Abstract

The side altar together with the Crucifixion Group (Christ, Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist) was built between 1647 and 1670. The work is a typical example for this period of the altar structure characterised by a simple, uniaxial form, richly decorated in an auricular style. On the altar, there are characteristic, winged angel heads directed straight ahead with a draped scarf around their necks - in a way that was typical in the 17th century. Also the sculptures located in the altar reredoses come from that time. They have the characteristic features of early baroque visual arts with regard to a rigid manner of shaping the figure and draping robes deprived of powerful expression, and taking the form of tight-fitting and flopping downwards in parallel way tubular folds.
