Abstract
The painting was made for the altar finial of the side altar in the years 1693-1705, in an unknown painting workshop. It depicts Our Lady of Sorrows and illustrates the prophecy of Simeon from the Gospel of St. Luke. The seven swords symbolise the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary: The Prophecy of Simeon, The Flight into Egypt, The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple, The Meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross, The Crucifixion, The Taking Down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross and The burial of Jesus (the preachers also mentioned similar but other episodes in Mary's life).
