Abstract

The painting titled "Madonna and the Child," located in the church in Krzywaczka, was created in 1886 by Antoni Stopa (1849-1922), a painter from Ostrysz (near Maków Podhalański). The piece is an example of Stopa's early works, which were heavily influenced by his teacher from the School of Fine Arts in Cracow – Jan Matejko. The church in Krzywaczka boasts two other pieces created by the same painter: "Most Sacred Heart of Jesus" and "Christ Crucified". In iconographic terms, the painting is a reduced version of the "Sistine Madonna" painted by Rafael in 1513-1514.
