Abstract

Lenten cloth with the representation of Pietà was made in 1676. Its dating is usually given after Hanna Pieńkowska, who in 1975 read out the date: the year 1676. It is confirmed by the work's style with features characteristic of Polish painting in the 17th century. The Lenten veil was funded by Father Wojciech (Adalbert) Bińkowicz, a parish priest of Orawka parish in 1672-1693, as evidenced by the monogram placed on the cloth ("AB"). There are few Lenten cloths left in Poland, so Orava's works (there are also three Lenten cloths in the church) are particularly popular.
