Abstract

The painting of Saint Sebastian is placed in the reredos from around 1700. The scene shown in the painting in which Saint Sebastian stands pierced by arrows and tied to a tree, has become the dominant approach to this representation in art since the 15th century. In addition, in modern art, also an angel appeared, removing arrows from the saint's wounds, just like in the work in question. Saint Sebastian is a Roman martyr who died during the reign of Emperor Diocletian at the beginning of the 4th century. He is worshipped as a patron in infectious diseases, patron of shooters, soldiers, hunters and war invalids.
