Abstract

The sculpture of Saint Peter, housed in the church porch of the temple in Paczółtowice, is an early baroque work of unknown origin and authorship. It was probably created in the first half of the 17th century. Lack of source information does not allow to determine whether it was associated with any of the altars in the church in Paczółtowice. The sculpture depicts Saint Peter in the iconographic convention typical of this figure, i.e. as a mature, bearded man in a long robe and a cloak. In the left hand of the statue, there may have originally been keys – a traditional attribute of Saint Peter – which are currently missing. This symbolises the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven that Peter received from Christ. Saint Peter came from a fishing family of Bethsaida, he was a brother of Saint Andrew. Initially, he was a disciple of Saint John the Baptist. Later, under his influence, he became one of the first disciples of Christ. During the persecution under Nero, he was crucified head down at his own request, because he felt he was not worthy to die like Christ.
