The painting was made in 1771 by Kazimierz Mołodziński – a painter who was born and worked in Cracow. Mołodziński was a painter of large-format religious paintings, continuing late Baroque tradition. The painting was placed in the high altar of the church in Czulice. Attributes of St. Nicholas depicted in the painting refer to the legends associated with the life of the saint.
