Abstract

The painting depicting St. Matthew was created in the 18th century. Most likely it is one of the four representations of evangelists, among which the painting of St. John has been preserved. Saint Matthew was a publican who was chosen by Jesus as one of his disciples. He was the author of the first Gospel. In the painting of Wieliczka, St. Matthew is portrayed during his writing the Gospel in the company of an angel.
