The painting was created by an unknown artist in the 19th century. The work presents Saint Martin, who in 356 left the army of Constantius in Gaul and became a disciple of Saint Hilary. According to legend, he was to share his coat with the poor, which is why he is often depicted in iconography as a soldier sitting on a horse and cutting his coat with a sword for the poor.
