Abstract

The statue of St. John was created in the second half of the 18th century and may be a remnant of the sculptural decoration of a now non-existent altar. In iconography, this saint has been always portrayed as a young man, because, according to tradition, he is considered the youngest disciple of Christ. One of his attributes is the chalice, sometimes with a serpent emerging from it (a symbol of poison) – St. John drank a cup of poisoned wine without suffering any harm.
