Abstract

The sculpture of St. Adalbert was created in the third quarter of the 18th century as a part of the sculptural set of the high altar in the church of St. Valentine in Krempachy. Unfortunately, archival sources do not reveal the author of the sculptures for the high altar. Undoubtedly, they were made by one of the Spiš artists who were fond of the dominance of figural and ornamental sculpture over painting in works of small architecture. Saint Adalbert lived in 956-997. He was a bishop of Prague from 983. In 997, he set off to Poland and then to Prussia in order to convert pagans. He suffered a martyr's death, probably pierced with spears.
