Abstract

The statue of the Mother of God holding the dead body of Jesus, popularly called Pietà, was consecrated in the church in Tenczyn in August 1898. The iconographic theme gained popularity in the Middle Ages and still serves to arouse piety and compassion. The sculpture is an example of a serial production that took place in Munich at the end of the 19th century.
