Abstract

An epitaph characterised by simple forms (originating from Ancient history), widely used in Classicism and Romanticism. The lower part with the niche evokes solutions popular among Cracovian stonemasons with a semi-circular cut-out niche for the urn (Rybiński's tombstone in Włocławek, 1824). The upper part, however, imitates simple, antique stelas with acroterions, which were simplified in this work to stepped-shaped frames. Edward Stehlik, the author of the epitaph plaque, and one of the greatest Cracovian stonemasons in the 19th century, willingly introduced antique motifs to his works.
