Abstract

The altar for the chapel of the Virgin Mary, together with statues of St. Anne and St. Joachim, was built before 1765. Most likely it was made in the workshop of the Kornecki family of Gdów. The statue is closely related to the iconographic programme of the altar centered around the statue of Mary, whose image is presented in the main area. Saint Joachim was portrayed as a mature or elderly man, because thanks to his prayers and fasting in the wilderness, he became a father of a child – Mary – in old age (according to tradition). He is usually depicted in the company of his wife – St. Anne.
