Abstract

The author of the work and the exact date of its creation remain unknown. The painting might have been made at a similar time as the main reredos in the church in Harklowa, that is in the 18th century. The work depicts Our Lady of Sorrows, and illustrates a fragment of the Gospel of St. Luke, which describes the Simeon's prophecy concerning the sufferings that Mary would experience. The seven swords symbolise the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary: the Prophecy of Simeon, the Flight into Egypt, the Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple, the Meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross, the Crucifixion, the Taking down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross and the Burial of Jesus.
