Abstract

The painting concerned is a work of an unknown author and was created in the 20th century. It depicts St. Andrew Bobola – a Jesuit, a missionary and a martyr, one of the patrons of Poland. St Andrew Bobola was born in Strachocin in 1592, and he died a martyr's death in Janów Poleski in 1657. The cult of St Andrew Bobola developed from the beginning of 18th century in Poland, Germany and Austria. In iconography, he was first presented amid or at the background of the scenes of martyrdom, with sabres stuck in his neck and the left hand. Since 19th century his image has been presented without the previously accompanying scenes. Facial features, also on the image from Stróże, mostly tend to be replicated from the graphics of a Roman artist Girolamo Rossi.
