Abstract

The sculpture was created in the third quarter of the 18th century as one of the elements of the sculptural set of the high altar in St. Valentine's Church in Krempachy. The altar was built after 1761. Unfortunately, archival sources do not reveal the author of the sculptures for the reredos. Undoubtedly, they were made by one of the Spiš artists who were fond of the dominance of figural and ornamental sculpture over painting in works of small architecture. The figure depicts Saint Joseph, protector of the Holy Family, patron of the universal Church, carpenters, woodcutters, craftsmen, all working people, Christian families and good death.
