The altar was made at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its iconographic programme was inspired by the growing cult of the Counter-Reformation period related to the Passion of Christ, and the image of the Christ Crucified incorporated in the heart motif indicates a relationship with the cult of Cordis Jesu (the Heart of Jesus).
