Abstract

The sculpture of the Risen Christ in the altar finial of the church in Krempany depicts the Saviour triumphant who rose from the grave. The work represents a classic iconographic depiction of Risen Christ, developed yet in the Middle Ages: Christ is half-naked, wearing a red cloak. He blesses with one hand and holds a flag in the other – a symbol of triumph over sin and death. The placement of a figure of the Risen Christ in the altar finial is extremely rare, and therefore, this sculpture constitutes a very interesting example of such an ideological solution of altar decoration. The sculpture was probably created in a provincial workshop in the second half of the 20th century. Unfortunately, archival sources do not reveal the author of the work, most probably operating in the area of Spiš (Spisz).
