Abstract

The statue of Christ at the Pillar was probably created in the second half of the 18th century or in the first half of the 19th century. Showing the Flagellation of Christ refers to the Gospel of Saint Mark, which describes how Pilate condemned Jesus to be flagellated and crucified (Mark 15, 15). Scenes depicting the flagellation by torturers influenced separation of the image of Christ at the Pillar itself which most probably served as individual contemplation of Passion of the Christ.
